Our Programs

Our core mission is to assist veterans, service members and their families by providing education, coordinating with service providers, and reducing the barriers to veterans seeking benefits.

Breaking Barriers to Benefits

There are seven programs that serve Veterans and their families through information, financial assistance and distribution of needed goods and services.

This program is to get Veterans out of living in cars, sometimes with family members or on the street and into sustainable housing.   This assistance can take several forms such as paying for apartment security deposits, helping clear up past debts so that Veterans Administration can provide housing vouchers etc.  Veterans must be able to obtain either other public or private investment or support themselves after PSVS’s temporary assistance.

Part of homeless assistance will be the Michael Jameson Housing Assistance Award.  This award of up to $2,500 for each veteran will be given to two veterans who are currently homeless or in danger of becoming homeless.  Applicants for the Jameson Housing Assistance Award must be residents of Pierce, Thurston, Mason or Lewis County Washington and must have an annual household income below the median for their county of residence.  Grant applications will be open for several months during the summer and grants will be awarded in the late fall of the year.

This program assists Veterans who are seeking educational advancement to reintegrate into society.   However, some Veterans are finding that specialized equipment for completing classes toward a degree or certificate is expensive and not covered by Veterans educational benefits.  PSVS fills that gap for eligible Veterans so that they become self-sufficient.

Taxpayer funded County Assistance Funds are not available for Veterans who:

  • Are newer residents to the Puget Sound region
  • Have incomes over 150 percent of the poverty level
  • Have certain types of service discharges
  • Do not have all of the eligibility documentation
  • Have requested assistance that exceeds the program limits
  • Request types of assistance not covered by the Veterans Assistance Fund.

PSVS evaluates these funding denials on a case by case basis to see if PSVS assistance would allow veterans to remain in or repair homes, obtain employment or pursue education.
